The great Chinese economy has grown in spurts since the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949. The basic structure is essentially that a developing country working with the majority of the population in the area. However, there is a substantial industrial base and growing pockets of advanced manufacturing and technology companies, including a space program.
The economy has grown rapidly and steadily to about eight to nine percent per year since the introduction of economic reforms in the 1980s.
